Leveraging the Web for Synchronous Versus Asynchronous Distance Learning

چکیده
This paper reports on the authors’ experiences in designing and teaching synchronous distance learning classes in electrical and computer engineering and in designing asynchronous distance learning classes for a graduate program in information technology. These experiences provide insight into the characteristics, benefits, and limitations of these two modes of distance learning. These characteristics imply critical pedagogical and practical issues related to the design, development, and delivery of synchronous and asynchronous distance learning classes. For any form of distance learning to be effective, teaching styles and course design must be altered, at least to some extent, from teaching styles and course design for traditional non-distance learning classroom instruction. Synchronous distance learning classes can be modeled closely after traditional classes, however effectiveness can be substantially increased through use of the World Wide Web and other Internet applications. Asynchronous distance learning classes require a substantially different model with the World Wide Web as the fundamental enabling technology. Our asynchronous course design is built around short “lectures” delivered via streaming audio and graphics. Thus, we are maintaining a lecture-centric approach to learning, but have recognized that the form of the lecture must be significantly redefined.

Designing an Asynchronous/Synchronous Combination Distance Learning Environment based on Web-BBS
This paper proposes a new distance education architecture to integrate both BBS and WWW features, is so-called IVC (Internet Virtual Classroom). This architecture has not only the traditional asynchronous characteristics of learning systems on WWW, but also synchronous interactions that traditional BBS service owned. This sort of learning environment can record and the learning flows of learner...
متن کاملSynchronous and Asynchronous Multimedia and Iranian EFL Learners’ Learning of Collocations
The use of effective multimedia instructions such as mobiles, computers, and the internet in language learning has turned out to be useful since the last decades. The impact of multimedia and synchronous approaches of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners' learning of language skills and components has been studied to some extent. However, th...
متن کاملSurface and deep learning processes in distance education: Synchronous versus asynchronous systems
Distance learning is different from regular learning in the classroom. One of the main factors which influence the effectiveness of the learning process is the interaction that exists between the teacher and the student. Our research indicates that different interactions have different effects. There are two methods used for implementing distance learning systems, i.e. synchronous and asynchron...
متن کاملLearner outcomes in an asynchronous distance education environment
This research investigated student outcomes in a web-based distance learning environment characterized by asynchronous electronic communications between student and teacher. We employed two dominant theories}the theory of planned behavior and innovation diffusion theory}to study student reactions to web-based distance education. We hypothesized that student perceptions of the technology are pos...
متن کاملAn Integrated Architecture for Synchronous and Asynchronous Distance Learning
Distance learning offers the potentiality of continuing education by eliminating temporal and geographical barriers. Despite extensive research and experimentation efforts in developing synchronous and asynchronous distance learning systems, integration of the concerned systems has not been realized. In this paper we identify the requirements of integrating a synchronous distance learning platf...
